The Garlic Hunt App

The Garlic Hunt App was my senior Capstone project that I completed at California State University of Monterey Bay during my undergraduate. I completed this project by myself. It was hard to complete everything that I needed for this project since I was a team of one. I had to make a list of the task I needed to complete, organize them by importance and what chronologically made sense, and then tackled each task one by one while receiving feedback from my fellow classmates and my professor.

Style Guide

When creating the app, I tried to keep in mind the main colors that are currently used at the amusement park. The 4 main colors that were used were purple, green, black and white. I created a different text than what is currently used at the website since I felt like it fit more of the theme of a scavenger hunt app as well as a fun font that is easy for kids to read.

Creating Characters

When creating the character that would be guiding you though the app, I wanted to create something that not only represents Gilroy Gardens, but Gilroy, CA as well. There are currently 2 mascots for Gilroy Gardens. I created my own garlic character named Gilbert and gave it the signature green Hawaiian shirt with khaki shorts. The character was hand drawn using Procreate.

Low Fidelity Prototype

When coming up with the screens for the app, I sketched out frame per frame of the basic layout of the app and where each screen would ultimately lead to. I created notes for myself to make sure what was going on the specific screen as well as note what you will click on in order to lead you to the next screen.

Overall, this project showed me how much time and effort goes into creating a prototype from scratch and by yourself. I wish I had gotten more time to develop this project further and to develop some areas on the prototype that might still be confusing. I would love to continue with this concept on my own time and perhaps present my idea to Gilroy Gardens as an application they can incorporate into the park.
